Louange à Allah et encore louange à Allah, prières et salut d’Allah sur notre Prophète Muhammad ainsi que sur sa famille et ses alliés.

Ensuite :

Ma Oumma bien-aimée, le Salut d’Allah et Sa Miséricorde sur vous et Sa Bénédiction.

Je m’adresse à vous au sujet de l’embargo qui pèse sur Ghaza et la voie à suivre pour la libérer ainsi que le reste de la Palestine des mains de l’ennemi sioniste.

Pour commencer je dis :

Parmi les plus grands malheurs à la vue desquels se brisent même les cœurs des hommes les plus durs, est de voir leurs propres enfants faire l’objet d’une mort lente à cause de la malnutrition et l’absence de soins et tout cela à cause du blocus injuste.

Ma communauté Musulmane, la Palestine et ses habitants subissent ces deux choses depuis presque un siècle à présent par les mains des chrétiens et des juifs. Ces deux-là ne se sont pas emparé de la Palestine par les négociations et le dialogue mais plutôt par le Fer et le Feu (les armes) et telle est la voie pour la récupérer.

Ne repousse le Fer que le Fer, Allah nous a démontré la manière de mettre fin à la violence des mécréants en disant :

« Combats donc dans le sentier d’Allah, tu n’es responsable que de toi même, et incite les croyants (au combat) Allah arrêtera certes la violence des mécréants. Allah est plus redoutable en force et plus sévère en punition » [an-Nissa’ :84]

C’est donc par l’incitation et le combat que l’on met fin à la violence des mécréants.

Qu’est-ce qui s’interpose donc entre nous et le Jihad?

C’est la grande quantité de chaînes qu’a mis en place cette coalition croiso-sioniste en la personne des gouverneurs de la région, ceux-ci remplissant ainsi ce rôle de même que leurs savants.

Serviteurs d’Allah! L’injuste blocus sur Ghaza a attiré l’attention et confirmé que les fils de la Oumma et ses dirigeants sont acculés par l’ennemi, dénués de leur volonté et privés de leur liberté, sauf celui à qui Allah a fait miséricorde. Son impuissance est apparue clairement ainsi que sa faiblesse, comment une personne faisant elle-même l’objet d’un blocus peut-elle en libérer une autre?

La personne dénuée d‘une chose ne peut l’octroyer à autrui.

Cette dure réalité, il incombe de lui faire face et de s’empresser de trouver des solutions authentiques pour la résoudre, loin des idées stériles et des avis maladifs qui tournent autour de nos ennemis parmi les gouverneurs de la région.

Ma communauté Musulmane, en dépit de ce dur embargo contre toi, il y a là pour toi une occasion immense de recouvrer ta liberté et sortir de l’état de soumission et de suivi à cette coalition croiso-sioniste.

Pour ce faire, il te faut obligatoirement te défaire des liens de l’humiliation et de servilité avec lesquels nous enchaînent les garants de cette coalition que sont les gouverneurs dans nos pays et leurs auxiliaires, autant que de ceux des savants des gouverneurs. Se délier aussi des dirigeants des groupes islamiques qui incluent à présent dans leur méthodologie la reconnaissance officielle du gouverneur qui a trahi la religion et la Oumma ainsi que la participation à l’organisation politique du pays, qu’importe qu’elle soit au pouvoir ou dans l’opposition.

Ou bien encore ces autres groupes qui se sont imposé une si grande mise en garde qu’elle a atteint le niveau de peur les empêchant d’accomplir le Jihad. Le Jihad, cet acte d’adoration qu’interdisent les gouvernants et qui constitue le sommet de la religion. C‘est aussi la voie à suivre pour mettre fin à la violence des mécréants et faire sauter le blocus qui pèse sur les Musulmans.

Certains de ces groupes masquent la connivence avec les gouverneurs et l’inaccomplissement du Jihad par « le bien de la Da’wa » au point que ce slogan est devenu une idole que l’on adore en dehors d’Allah et sous sa prétention, les ordres donnés par les dirigeants de ces groupes sont entrés en confrontation avec ceux d’Allah et ceux du Messager d’Allah -pbsl- et tel est l’égarement manifeste.

Ma communauté Musulmane, il te faut te libérer de ces liens du Faux et te soumettre à Allah et n’adorer que Lui sans rien Lui associer. A ce moment là seulement, l’Homme devient libre, à ce moment là aussi il peut accourir à la libération de sa Oumma, de la Palestine et d’al-Qods. Il verra alors les portes grandes ouvertes sur la Liberté et la Dignité, sur les terrains des Hommes et des batailles, de la mort et du combat dans le sentier d’Allah comme c’est le cas en Afghanistan, au Waziristan, au Maghreb Islamique, en Somalie, au Cachemire, en Tchétchénie et au plus important et le plus nuisible pour l’ennemi, Bagdad et ses alentours, maison du Califat.

C’est dans ces endroits et à l’ombre des épées que croît l’Honneur, tout endroit où germe l’Honneur est bon et sur sa terre les cous des injustes sont frappés et les cœurs des croyants apaisés.

Ma communauté, tu n’es pas sans ignorer qu’aujourd’hui le terrain de Jihad le plus proche pour secourir la Palestine est l’Irak. Il faut donc s’en soucier, s’axer dessus et le soutenir. L’obligation de le secourir est confirmé sur les Musulmans des pays voisins tout comme il incombe aux gens du Cham tout entier, les habitants de la terre bénie de prendre conscience du bienfait immense d’Allah sur eux et qu’ils s’acquittent de l’obligation de soutien à leurs frères Moujahidines en Irak qui pèse sur eux.

C’est aussi une grande occasion et un lourd devoir pour mes frères palestiniens émigrés, ceux dont le chemin entre eux et le Qods a été obstrué, afin qu’ils les apaisent des soucis causés par les coalisés et les groupes qui ont sombré dans la tromperie qu’est la Démocratie. Qu’ils s’empressent de prendre position dans les rangs des Moujahidines sur la terre des Deux Fleuves afin qu’Allah leur accorde la victoire du fait de leur soutien et leur totale remise d’eux-mêmes à Allah.

Puis, qu’ils s’élancent vers al-Qods bénie depuis l’Irak afin que les Moujahidines de l’extérieur rencontrent leurs frères à l’intérieur et qu’ils nous fassent revivre le souvenir de Hittin et que se réjouissent les yeux des Musulmans par la victoire éclatante.

Ma communauté Musulmane, un embargo après lequel s’ensuit la mort fait partie des plus grandes injustices et des plus féroces. Ne s’y propose ni n’y participe qu’une personne dont le cœur est plus dur que la pierre ou pire encore !

Il a été rapporté un récit authentique de notre Prophète -pbsl- dans lequel il dit : « Une femme est entrée en Enfer à cause d’une chatte qu’elle a ligoté et n’a pas nourri et (qu’elle a) empêchée de se nourrir des vermines de la terre jusqu’à ce qu’elle mourût »

Si telle fût sa récompense pour une chatte, qu’en est-il de centaines de milliers d’enfants et de femmes orphelins ? C’est là un discours énorme et un crime gigantesque, mes mots ne suffisent pas à décrire ses misères et à qualifier l’énormité de ces douleurs.

Ma communauté Musulmane, ce blocus meurtrier a débuté après le soutien des arabes d’Annapolis aux américains et au lobby sioniste contre les Moujahidines en Palestine. Ceci constitue un acte annulatoire de l’Islam parmi les dix actes annulatoires, ils sont de ce fait associés à ce crime féroce. Il incombe donc aux Musulmans de les prendre en animosité et d’accourir à leur destitution tout comme il incombe de se désavouer d’eux publiquement dans la mesure du possible, sinon par le cœur.

Ce qui a amplifié ce malheur, c’est que des grands parmi ceux à qui l’on attribut la science et la prédication, se sont présentés à la Oumma dans sa dernière épreuve-ci avec des pensées égarantes lorsqu’ils sont apparus faisant l’éloge des gouverneurs, reposant l’espoir de la Oumma sur eux afin qu’ils fassent sauter le blocus alors qu’ils savent pertinemment que ces gouverneurs sont la base même de ce crime qu’est le blocus.

Poésie :

Celui qui cherche refuge auprès de la prospérité en cas de tristesse

Est semblable à celui qui se protège de l’incendie par le feu ardent

Serviteurs d’Allah, nous avons face à nous trois partis. Le premier est celui des Moujahidines et ceux qui les soutiennent, le second est celui des abstentionnistes qui se gardent bien de secourir la Palestine par le Jihad dans la voie d’Allah et ce sans excuse. Et le troisième est la coalition croiso-sioniste et ceux qui les soutiennent et en première ligne les gouverneurs de la région et les savants du Mal.

Le bienheureux est celui qui se positionne dans le premier parti, je demande à Allah de me compter et vous-même au nombre des bienheureux.

Le frustré est celui qui se trouve dans le deuxième parti qui se garde de secourir la religion et le malheureux est celui qui fait partie du troisième, qu’Allah nous en préserve ainsi que vous aussi.

En conclusion, je dis que la Palestine ne nous reviendra pas par les négociations des gouverneurs serviles et leurs stratagèmes, ni par les manifestations des prédicateurs abstentionnistes et leurs votes car ces deux-là sont deux causes du malheur de la Oumma.

Mais elle nous reviendra plutôt - avec la permission d’Allah- si nous nous réveillons de notre insouciance et si nous nous accrochons à notre religion et lui sacrifions nos personnes et nos biens.

Ô toi l’insouciant léthargique prends garde!

Car le pire des jours est celui où l’on repoussera le négligeant

Quelle est la valeur de la vie d’un homme s’il devient esclave ?

Sa terre gouvernée par un malheureux damné

Il y a dans ma terre de nombreuses bases pour [les forces de] la mécréance

Chaque tyran en ajoute à sa guise

Le jour où vous avez troqué le Jihad contre la négligence

Vos maîtres et vos chefs sont devenus vils

Nous voyons donc la mort comme un soulagement si…

Les Juifs et les escadrons nous ont dominés

Les terres d’al-Qods sont conquises

Ô gens où sont vos promesses et menaces?

Et un orphelin qui se tord de douleur à cause de la faim

Alors que les Riyal et les salaires coulent à flot

Ô tyrans nous sommes lassés de vos chaînes

Et sous la domination les lions dorment-ils ?

Ô fils de la Oumma levez-vous et élancez-vous!

Faites don de votre sang pour secourir la Vérité

Lorsque la croyance est menacée

N’importe quel sacrifice est bon marché excepté la mort

Je ne vis et n’offre ma vie que pour ma religion

Pour sa lanterne mon sang est un combustible

Donc, sans l’Islam c’est l’humiliation éternelle

Et les têtes seront dressées lorsqu’il l’emportera

Ô mon Seigneur, soulage nous ainsi que nos frères sous le blocus en Palestine et dans les autres terres des Musulmans.

Ô mon Seigneur, secoure les Moujahidines en Palestine, en Irak, en Afghanistan, au Maghreb Islamique, dans la Péninsule des arabes, en Somalie, en Tchétchénie et ailleurs.

Ô mon Seigneur, charges toi de nos ennemis parmi les juifs et les chrétiens et leurs alliés. Ô mon Seigneur, charges toi des tyrans arabes et étrangers et leurs alliés car tu es Capable sur eux.

Ô mon Seigneur, Ô Majestueux et Plein de Générosité, Ô Majestueux et Plein de Générosité, il n’y a de Force et de Puissance qu’en Toi.

Aie pitié de notre faiblesse, renforce notre ardeur et raffermis nos pas, raffermis nos tirs et unifie nos rangs et donne nous la victoire sur les peuples mécréants, Tu nous suffis et quel bon Garant que Toi.

Notre dernière invocation est la Louange à Allah Seigneur de l’Univers.

To the Western Peoples

“Reasons of the struggle on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the occupying state of Israel”

In the Name of Allâh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

To the Western peoples in general,

Peace be upon him who follows the guidance.

My speech to you is about the reasons of the struggle between our and your civilizations, meaning the Palestinian issue.

This struggle is increasing under your current policy, and I confirm here that the Palestinian issue is the first basic issue of my Ummah. Thus, it was an important factor which motivated me since my childhood as well as the (19) freemen and it created in us a great feeling to defend the oppressed and to punish the Jewish aggressors and their supporters.

Then your aggression against us continued in Lebanon and so on, and this was the cause of the September 11th as well as previous and following events, so I draw your attention here and I say to you:

There is a precious opportunity for the just ones among you who want to know the truth. The Jews celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of their state and Western leaders take part in it.

This celebration has many important significations which I will summarize in three points:

Firstly:

This event shows clearly that there was no state for Israel 60 years ago, but it was founded on the extorted land of Palestine by military force, and this is the proof that our issue is truthful and that Palestine is our land and the Israelis are occupiers who must be fought.

Secondly:

This event showed that the majority of your mass media gave up the objectivity and professionalism in this and similar issues. The responsible ones were misleading you during (60) years and turned the truths upside down to show the occupying invading Jews as victims, and on the other hand the oppressed Palestinians demanding ones of their land as terrorist headmen.

Here it appears the danger of the dominating mass media which play the role of sorcerers in falsifying the truths and forming a misleading public opinion that put the Western peoples in a position to engage in an unjust war against us illegitimately. This appeared clearly also in the invasion of Iraq, when these mass media propagandized for the lies of the White House’s leader and his followers, and then the Zionist lobby used this mass media to turn the truths upside down to be in favor of the Israelis.

Thirdly:

The participation of the Western leaders in this celebration confirms that the West supports this unjust Jewish occupation of our land, and they stand with the Israelis in the same trench against us, and they confirmed this practically when they sent their troops to south of Lebanon to support the Jews.

The Western politicians are still living with a mentality of the Middle Ages in oppressing the others by occupying their lands, killing their peoples and robbing their riches. This was proved clearly by Bush and Blair in the invasion of Iraq, where they robbed its oil and humiliated its people.

Even if Britain enabled the Jews of occupying Palestine through Balfour declaration, and even if the United Nations decided to hand over Palestine to the Jews, these declarations have no value for us and don’t concern us. The one who possesses no thing, gives it to him who does not merit.

The United Nations Council is nothing but one of your tools. The peace negotiations which have started (60) years ago and still going on, are not but a means to deceive the stupid ones. And the promises of Bush about a state in the full sense of the word, are nothing but a means to drag the issue and to gain more time, although the Jihad is a duty to free the whole Palestine.

Therefore,

We understand that the unjust persons tend usually to encroach upon the rights of the others to take their money illegitimately whether by trickery or armed robbery. And if those reached the authority, the things become worse as much as the difference between the power of the state and the power of the armed gang.

In our case today, the dispraised terrorism and armed robbery are carried out by the leader of the strongest military force known to humanity, thus the catastrophe is not regional but global.

Despite the large tragedies we face in your wars, but we endure and stay honest in fighting the aggressors. But what brings queasiness is that after all this killing, destruction, robbery, lowliness and ribaldries, your politicians still continue on talking about values; this is insupportable, don’t bring together two injustices. If you insisted on robbery you will find worse, be ashamed and stop lying by talking about values.

I will give examples from the reality of Palestine which clarify more the issue and show the falseness of your values. The Double standards in the same issue is one of your politicians’ characteristics. You classify the Palestinian organizations as terrorists, thus you make a boycott against them and you punish them while the Israelis kill the civilians from women and children with booby-trapped cars, as what was happened in Yafa and Hayfa etc.

And more than that was when the Zionist organizations carried out massacres against the Palestinian villagers to terrorize them, displace them and extort their lands, so what was your attitude towards this?

The answer was clear by your dealings with Begin - the well known bloodthirsty of Dir Yaseen massacre, he was the leader of an unjust Zionist organization, he used to slit open the bellies of the pregnant women in the massacre of Dir Yassen.

Is there any horrible and ugly terrorism more than this? This is the top of criminality and the bottom of degeneration. Can any man kill a villager woman who had no relation with fighting and slit open her belly while being pregnant?

Seeing this horrible crime makes heads hoary and it is unbelievable except that the documents prove it, and more than this there are Israelis who are proud of it and said, if the massacre of Dir Yassen didn’t happen the Palestinians would never leave their lands for us and we would never be there.

Then what was the attitude of the West towards Begin? Instead of punishing him for his crimes, he was named and recognized as prime minister; the West wasn’t content with this and they granted him the Nobel Peace Prize.

What an aggression and injustice…

What a cheapness of the innocents’ bloods…

What a mercilessness and savagery…

The massacres didn’t stop after Dir Yasseen but they came successively, and today we are living with the massacre of Ghazza which happens before the whole world. One million and a half persons are exposed to the slow death because of malnutrition and lack of medicine due to the murderous siege.

More than this, your politicians oblige the governor of Egypt to fasten the siege from his side to stifle the feeble ones most of them are women and children.

Then, tell me what is the difference between your values in your contemporary Jahiliyya (state of ignorance) and the values of the Jahiliyya of Haman who supported Pharaoh in killing the children of “Bani Israel” in Egypt.

At last, he is not blamed; he who defends his children and shows enmity toward the followers of the unjust Pharaoh’s policy. We will continue in fighting the Israelis and their allies to enforce the right and to defend the oppressed people.

And we will never give up even if one span from Palestine “by the permission of Allah” as long as there is one honest Muslim on the ground.

“Him who plants the thorns will never reap the grape”

And peace be upon him who follows the guidance

تحليل صهيونى : حماس حققت نجاحات كبيره وعمليتها عززت موقفها

فلسطين الآن – وكالات – قال المحلل العسكري لصحيفة 'معاريف' العبرية :' إن حماس نجحت في تحقيق نجاحات من خلال عملياتها العسكرية الأخيرة ضد الاحتلال الأمر الذي أدى إلى قلب مجريات الأمور على طاولة المفاوضات من خلال الوسيط المصري بعد أن كان لـ(إسرائيل) اليد العليا، لاسيما بعدما ارتكبته من محرقة بحق الفلسطينيين'.

وأوضح 'إمير بحبوط' في تحليل له نشر الأحد 27/4/2008، على صفحات 'معاريف' أن حماس وذراعها العسكري كتائب القسام تسببت من خلال عملياتها الناجحة بتوجيه انتقادات لقيادة وحدة غزة والتي يقوها العميد 'تشيكو تامير'.

وأشار 'بحبوط' إلى أن التناول اليومي لوسائل الإعلام الأجنبية لما تعرضه حماس من دعاية إعلامية حول نقص المواد التموينية والوقود في غزة خاصة بعد أن أوقفت وكالة الغوث أعمالها لنقل المواد التموينية إلى المحتاجين في غزة ساهم في قلب مجريات الأمور لصالح حماس.

وأكد المحلل العسكري لصحيفة 'معاريف' أن هذه الصورة بوضعها الحالي والتي هي لصالح حركة حماس غير مريحة لحكومة الاحتلال الإسرائيلي لاسيما وزير الحرب أيهود باراك، مشيراً إلى خشية أوساط سياسية وعسكرية من أن التوصل لتهدئة مع حماس بهذه الآونة سيعزز موقف الأخيرة فلسطينياً وعربياً ويجعلها قوة لا يمكن تجاوزها.

قلب مجريات الأمور
قال 'بحبوط' :' إنه في أعقاب العمليات العسكرية الأخيرة التي نفذتها كتائب القسام الذراع العسكري لحركة حماس في موقع كرم أبو سالم -نذير الانفجار-، تغيرت صورة الموقف الذي كان سائداً بين الجيش الإسرائيلي وحركة حماس الذي تولد أعقاب عملية المحرقة -الشتاء الساخن-'.

ويرى أن الجيش الإسرائيلي في عملية -الشتاء الساخن- التي نفذها جيش الاحتلال أواخر شهر شباط/فبراير ومطلع شهر آذار/مارس وراح ضحيتها ما يزيد عن (135 شهيداً) ثلثهم من الأطفال، نجح في توجيه ضربة قوية ضد الجهاز العسكري لحركة حماس.

ويعتقد 'بحبوط ' أن حركة حماس في أعقاب هذه الضربة -الشتاء الساخن- أو التي عرفت بالمحرقة، أصبحت كما وصفها بعض القادة العسكريين 'تعاني من ضربة قوية' وفي 'حالة من الهلع' و'تلملم الجراح'.

وأشار إلى أن المستوى السياسي في (إسرائيل) كان مرتاحاً من نتائج عملية 'الشتاء الساخن', ولذلك أعطى أوامره للجيش لتخفيض مستوى العمليات العسكرية حسب مستوى العمليات التي تنفذها حماس على قاعدة 'إذا أوقفت حماس العمليات فإن الجيش سوف يوقف عملياته'.

ولفت إلى أن حماس خفضت من مستوى المواجهات مع الاحتلال حتى تتمكن من تنظيم الصفوف والاستعداد لسلسلة من العمليات، موضحاً أنه في هذه الفترة -التي اعتبرت (إسرائيل) أنها تمتلك اليد العليا في الميدان- جرت مباحثات بين الجانب الإسرائيلي برئاسة 'عاموس جلعاد ' والجانب المصري اللواء عمر سليمان للتوصل إلى تهدئة بين (إسرائيل) وحماس.

وأظهرت حماس أنها تريد تهدئة لأنها غير قادرة لمواجهة العمليات العسكرية الإسرائيلية, في مقابل التهدئة فإن (إسرائيل) سوف تسرع عملية إنجاز صفقة الجندي الذي تأسره فصائل المقاومة الفلسطينية بغزة جلعاد شاليط.

من جهتها، طلبت (إسرائيل) من حماس أن توقف عمليات تهريب السلاح والعمليات الفدائية تماما, وفي مقابل ذلك فإن (إسرائيل) تعمل على تسهيل الأوضاع الحياتية لدرجة معينة في قطاع غزة.

وأشار المحلل إلى أن المفاوضات التي جرت في القاهرة اعتبرت غير مقبولة من قبل حركة حماس, 'فحماس لا تقبل أن تحضر إلى المفاوضات وهي حركة تلعق جراحها ومكلومة كما يعتقد الجانب الإسرائيلي والذي كان يرى أن له اليد العليا في المفاوضات.

الحل .. ضربة
ونقل المحلل عن ضابط كبير في الجيش قوله :' إن الجيش لا يرغب في هذه اللحظة على الأقل حاليا في الدخول في مواجهة مع المستوى السياسي'، لكن ضابط كبير آخر أشار إلى أن عملية عسكرية واسعة قد تعمل على تغير صورة الوضع في المنطقة.

وأنحى الضابط الثاني باللوم على من وصفهم 'من يتسرعون في الوصول إلى تهدئة مع حماس بأنهم هم من يعارضون القيام بعملية عسكرية كبيرة في قطاع غزة'.

وفي نفس السياق، تحدث قائد المنطقة الجنوبية 'يوآب جلنت' -ولكن بصورة غير مباشرة- ' أنه إذا لم تقم بمهاجمة العدو –ويقصد حركة حماس- فإنه قد يهاجمك بضربة تغير صورة الموقف'.

The Islamic State of Iraq/Brutal Gangs kill Dozens Innocent Civilian Muslims in Baaqouba

In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah. And may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and his companions in entirety.

Allah the Merciful ordered to treat kindly the weak and poor people in several verses, and forewarned from arrogant harming the weak ill-treated men, women and children, He threatened them with the severe torment as He said here: [Those before them indeed plotted, but Allâh struck at the foundation of their building, and then the roof fell down upon them, from above them, and the torment overtook them from directions they did not perceive.] (16:26).

He the Great and Almighty forewarned from being involved in the Muslims' bloodshed and scolded harshly its doer by His saying: [And whoever kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell to abide therein; and the Wrath and the Curse of Allâh are upon him, and a great punishment is prepared for him.] (4:93). And as the prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Killing a believer is greater sin for Allah than the evanescence of the worldly existence."

What is happening on the land of the beloved Iraq from random killing of Muslims at the hands the crusader American gangs and its following militias, is the great unjustice and criminality which cannot be made except by merciless brutes who don't care about none but their desires which they want satisfy by every means!

Those are the malignant hands, low persons and dead consciences turning in the non blessed Trinity "Crusaders- Zionists- Safawids", joined afterwards by a dirty group from the American Sahawat (awakening councils) who destroyed the crops and the cattle.

At least eleven Iraqis, including women and children, have been killed and 32 others wounded in a US-led operation in Baghdad's Sadr City.

Artificially cooling Earth may prove perilous: study

WASHINGTON, April 24: Radical proposals to inject sulfur particles into the Earth’s stratosphere to cool it down and battle global warming could instead badly damage the ozone layer, a study warned today .

“Our research indicates that trying to artificially cool off the planet could have perilous side effects,” said researcher Simone Tilmes from the National Center for Atmospheric Research.

“While climate change is a major threat, more research is required before society attempts global geoengineering solutions.”The study, published today in Science Express, warns that injecting sulfate particles into the air at an altitude of some 10 to 50 kilometers (six to 30 miles), could lead to a loss of ozone above the Arctic and delay the recovery of the hole in the ozone layer above Antarctica by decades.

In the past few years, scientists have been studying “geoengineering” ways to combat global warming rather than by just reducing emissions of greenhouse gases alone.

One of the ideas put forward and studied by Nobel Chemistry laureate Paul Crutzen draws on the lessons learnt from volcanic explosions, when vast amounts of sulfur particles are unleashed into the air.

The sulfur, which blocks the sun’s rays, has in the past led to a cooling of surface temperatures around the volcano site.

Researchers, led by Tilmes, studied what would happen if regular, large amounts of sulfate particles were artificially injected into the atmosphere with the aim of cooling the surface temperatures.

But in fact the team found that over the next few decades, such large amounts of sulfates would likely destroy between about 25 to 75 percent of the ozone layer above the Arctic.

This could have a devastating effect on the northern hemisphere, computer simulations showed. The expected recovery of the hole over the Antarctic would also be delayed by 30 to 70 years.

Researchers found that such large amounts of sulfates would enable chlorine gases found in the cold layers of the stratosphere above the two Poles to become active, triggering a chemical reaction harmful to ozone.

Ozone is an unusual molecule. Ground-level ozone produced by pollution, mostly from cars, is harmful to the health. But in the stratosphere, where is it produced naturally, it screens out the sun’s dangerous ultra-violet rays, which can cause such things as skin cancer.

“This study highlights another connection between global warming and ozone depletion,” said co-author Ross Salawitch of the University of Maryland.

“These traditionally had been thought of as separate problems but are now increasingly recognized to be coupled in subtle, yet profoundly important, manners.”

The damaging effects of such sulfate treatments would be lessened in the second half of the century, when international accords on banning the production of ozone-depleting chemicals are due to be fully felt, the study added.—AFP
